HD video of duration it takes to fly over the borders of the former Austro-Hungarian empire, from a flight from Istanbul to Newark. Digital file, flat screen tv, loud 1 channel sound. 2013
"The Limits of Europe" began out of my travels to the Gezi Park protests of 2013 in Istanbul and coalesced with the recent immigration crisis, testing Europe's borders and definitions. The title's name utilizes the allusive word "Limits" and leaves it for interpretation.
This small ceramic sculpture that is blown-up as a photograph behind it is the depiction of the Greek goddess Europa being carried away by Zeus disguised as a white bull, as the famous Cretan story would have it.
"Greek boi" is a mixed media sculpture meant to evoke the classical world of Europe being gnawed away by the contemporary.
Here is an appropriated version of the opening lines of Robert Musil's "The Man Without Qualities", to reflect the reality of the day spent flying between Istanbul and New York.
Printed ever so slightly is a rendition of the Greek Myth of Europa.
